Frequently Asked Questions

Struggling to care for your fine or fragile hair? Find the answers you’re looking for below…

Is fine hair the same as thin hair?

Technically, fine and thin hair are different.

  • Fine hair describes the size and diameter of your hair strands. Fine hair is smaller, and more prone to oiliness and breakage than thicker hairs.
  • Thin hair is about coverage - you have thin hair if your hair is less dense (basically, when you have fewer hairs on your scalp).

This means that you could have thick hair (as in a lot of it), but the strands themselves may be smaller and finer. Or, you may have fine and thin hair. The way you treat the strands themselves is important to protect your hair from any unnecessary damage.

How do you look after fine or fragile hair?

There are several ways you can protect and care for fine or fragile hair.

  • Limit heat tools or chemical bleaching to protect the strands from further damage.
  • Consider using a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and potential breakage.
  • Use a Detangling Spray to make removing tangles easier while also nourishing your hair.
  • Opt for lightweight shampoos and conditioners, and concentrate conditioner to the mids and ends of your hair to maintain any volume.

Why does fine hair get oily quicker?

Since the hairs are usually smoother and smaller, the oil from your scalp is more likely to travel down the strands. This makes your hair feel like it gets oily quicker.

This is why you may need to wash your hair more frequently if it’s finer, or use dry shampoo to stop it looking and feeling greasy.

Why is my hair fragile?

Your hair can become fragile and more prone to breakage when it loses too much moisture and damaged bonds. Excess heat from styling, too much bleaching, or not caring properly for your hair can make the strands more fragile.

What is the best hair brush for fine hair?

Fine (or fragile) hair needs a little extra help to truly shine. That’s why you need a fine hair brush that’s designed to protect your hair - like our Ultimate Detangler Fine & Fragile

The long, soft flex teeth can slide into tangles without tugging, helping to remove knots without damaging your hair.
